Elektronátmeneteit, often translated as electron transitions, refers to the process where an electron in an atom or molecule changes its energy level. This change can occur when the atom or molecule absorbs or emits energy, typically in the form of a photon. Electrons exist in specific, quantized energy levels or orbitals. When an electron absorbs energy, it can jump to a higher energy level, a process known as excitation. Conversely, when an electron in a higher energy level loses energy, it can fall to a lower energy level, a process called relaxation. This emitted energy is often released as light.

The energy difference between the initial and final states of the electron dictates the energy of the photon absorbed or emitted. This energy difference corresponds to a specific wavelength or frequency of electromagnetic radiation. Therefore, analyzing the wavelengths of light absorbed or emitted by a substance can reveal information about its electronic structure. These transitions are fundamental to understanding phenomena such as atomic spectra, fluorescence, phosphorescence, and the color of objects. Different types of electronic transitions exist, categorized by the orbitals involved, such as sigma to sigma (σ→σ), pi to pi (π→π), and non-bonding to pi (n→π) transitions, each with characteristic energy requirements and spectral signatures. Studying these transitions is a cornerstone of spectroscopy and quantum chemistry.
