Elektronisädeitä, often translated as electron beams, are streams of electrons that travel at high speeds. These beams are typically generated by an electron gun, which uses a cathode to emit electrons through thermionic emission or field emission. The emitted electrons are then accelerated and focused using electric and magnetic fields.

The properties of an electron beam, such as its energy and intensity, can be precisely controlled. This controllability makes them valuable in a variety of applications. One of the most well-known uses is in cathode ray tubes (CRTs), found in older televisions and computer monitors, where the beam scans across a phosphor-coated screen to create an image.

In scientific research, electron beams are used in electron microscopes, such as scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and transmission electron microscopes (TEM). These microscopes utilize the electron beam to achieve much higher magnifications and resolutions than light microscopes, allowing for the visualization of microscopic structures. Electron beams are also employed in particle accelerators for fundamental physics research.

Industrial applications of electron beams include welding, surface treatment, sterilization, and lithography for manufacturing microelectronic components. The high energy density of focused electron beams allows for precise material modification and processing. Due to their charge, electron beams can be easily manipulated by electromagnetic fields, enabling sophisticated control over their trajectory and interaction with matter.
