Elektronikiihdyttimillä, commonly known as electron accelerators, are devices used to increase the kinetic energy of electrons to very high speeds. These machines employ electric and magnetic fields to achieve this acceleration. The fundamental principle involves applying an electric field that exerts a force on the negatively charged electrons, pushing them to higher velocities. Magnetic fields are often used to steer and focus the electron beam.

There are several types of electron accelerators, each suited for different applications. Linear accelerators (linacs) accelerate electrons in a straight line through a series of accelerating structures. Synchrotrons, on the other hand, accelerate electrons in a circular path, using magnetic fields to bend the electron beam into a loop while electric fields provide the acceleration. Storage rings are a type of synchrotron where electrons are kept circulating at high energy for extended periods.

Electron accelerators have a wide range of applications. In scientific research, they are crucial for particle physics experiments, where high-energy electrons are collided with other particles to study their fundamental constituents and interactions. They are also used in materials science to probe the structure of matter and in the development of new materials. In medicine, electron beams from accelerators are used for radiation therapy to treat cancer. Industrial applications include sterilization of medical equipment and food, as well as material modification and inspection.
