Elektronbindingen, often translated as electron binding, refers to the energy required to remove an electron from an atom, molecule, or solid. It is a fundamental concept in atomic and molecular physics, chemistry, and solid-state physics. The binding energy is a measure of the strength of the attractive forces holding the electron to the positively charged nucleus.

In an atom, electrons occupy distinct energy levels. The energy required to remove an electron from its ground state to infinity (where it is no longer bound to the atom) is its binding energy. This energy is typically measured in electron volts (eV). For instance, the binding energy of the outermost electron in hydrogen is approximately 13.6 eV. Electrons in inner shells are more tightly bound and thus have higher binding energies.

The concept of electron binding is crucial for understanding various phenomena. Photoelectron spectroscopy, for example, directly measures the binding energies of electrons in atoms and molecules, providing information about their electronic structure and chemical bonding. In solid-state physics, electron binding energies are related to the work function of a material, which is the minimum energy needed to remove an electron from the surface of a solid. Changes in electron binding energies can also indicate chemical reactions or phase transitions. The stability of atoms and molecules is directly related to the binding energies of their electrons.
