Elektrolyyteillä, or electrolytes, are substances that produce ions when dissolved in water, enabling the solution to conduct electricity. They are essential in various biological, chemical, and industrial processes. Common biological electrolytes include sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), chloride (Cl-), bicarbonate (HCO3-), and phosphate (PO43-), which play vital roles in maintaining cellular function, nerve conduction, muscle contraction, and fluid balance.

In the human body, electrolytes help regulate nerve and muscle function, hydrate the body, balance blood pH, and rebuild damaged tissues. They are obtained through diet, primarily from fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and electrolyte drinks. Imbalances in electrolytes can cause symptoms such as weakness, irregular heartbeat, confusion, and in severe cases, shock or coma.

Electrolytes are widely used in industrial applications, including in batteries, where they facilitate the flow of ions between electrodes to produce electrical energy. Lithium-ion batteries, for example, utilize electrolyte solutions to enable high energy density. They are also used in water treatment, chemical manufacturing, and as conductive mediums in electrolysis processes.

The physical and chemical properties of electrolytes depend on their concentration and the nature of ions they release. Strong electrolytes, such as sodium chloride, dissociate completely in water, while weak electrolytes, like acetic acid, only partially dissociate. Their behavior is often described using principles of ionic conductivity and electrochemical potential.
