Electrodebased

Electrodebased is an adjective used to describe devices, systems, or processes in which the electrode constitutes a central functional element. In practice, electrodebased technologies rely on electrochemical reactions at electrode–electrolyte interfaces, aided by ion transport through electrolytes. The term is commonly encountered in energy storage, electrochemical sensing, and electrocatalytic synthesis.

Applications include batteries and supercapacitors, fuel cells, sensors (such as amperometric and voltammetric sensors), electroplating and corrosion control, and electrochemical reactors for synthesis.

Key components and design considerations: electrode materials (carbon, metal, metal oxides, conducting polymers), microstructure (surface area, porosity), conductivity, and compatibility with electrolyte; electrode architecture (planar, 3D porous, fiber-based); interfacial engineering (passivation layers, SEI formation) for stability; and manufacturing methods (screen printing, inkjet, laser sintering) for scalable production.

Performance metrics: electrical conductivity, areal or volumetric capacity, energy and power density, rate capability, cycle life, sensitivity for sensors, selectivity, and response time.

Challenges: aging and degradation, dendrite formation in some metal systems, electrolyte compatibility, environmental impact, and cost. Prospects: advances in materials, interface control, and scalable fabrication could broaden electrodebased technologies across energy, sensing, and synthesis.
