Elaphus

Elaphus is a historical taxonomic name that has appeared in zoological literature as a genus within the deer family (Cervidae). The word derives from Latin elaphus, itself from the Greek elaphos, meaning deer or stag. In early classifications, Elaphus was used to designate deer-like mammals, including some fossil specimens.

In later taxonomic work, Elaphus was abandoned as a valid genus because its diagnostic characteristics were unclear or overlapped with those of other cervid groups. As a result, the name is not recognized as a current genus in modern taxonomy.
