Ekvivalentsuspõhimõttel, also known as the principle of equivalence, is a fundamental concept in Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity. It states that the effects of gravity are indistinguishable from the effects of acceleration. In simpler terms, if you are in a closed box, you cannot tell whether you are at rest in a gravitational field or accelerating uniformly in a field-free region of space.

This principle has profound implications for our understanding of gravity. Einstein used it to develop the idea that gravity is not a force in the traditional sense, but rather a curvature of spacetime caused by mass and energy. Imagine spacetime as a flexible sheet. Placing a heavy object on this sheet creates a dip, and other objects moving nearby will follow the curves of this dip, which we perceive as gravitational attraction.

The principle of equivalence is divided into two main parts: the weak equivalence principle and the strong equivalence principle. The weak equivalence principle states that all objects fall at the same rate in a gravitational field, regardless of their mass or composition. This has been experimentally verified to high precision. The strong equivalence principle extends this by stating that the outcome of any local non-gravitational experiment is independent of the velocity of the free-falling reference frame in which it is performed. This means that the laws of physics are the same everywhere in the universe, regardless of the local gravitational field.
