Ekkor

Ekkor is a fictional port city in the archipelago of Serenos, created for world-building and speculative fiction. The name Ekkor is drawn from the local Nyssian language and is commonly interpreted as "harbor of light." The city sits on the southeastern shore of Nyssa Island, where a natural crescent harbor is sheltered by basalt cliffs and coral reefs. It has a temperate maritime climate with mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers.

History traces back to small trading posts established in the 9th century. Ekkor grew as a hub for goods moving between inland kingdoms and distant shores, and it expanded into a regional maritime republic by the 14th century. In the modern era it operates as a constitutional city-state within the Serenos federation, with autonomous local governance.

Demographics estimate a population around 120,000. The city hosts a mix of Nyssians, Terrans, and coastal settlers, and uses Ekkorian as the primary language, with Nyssian and common trade languages also present.

Economy centers on the harbor and shipyards, complemented by glassmaking, fisheries, and a growing ecotourism sector focused on coastal and marine environments. The port remains a principal link for regional trade, passenger ferries, and cargo.

Culture and symbols include the Lantern Festival, held each midsummer, and the Lantern Market, a seaside bazaar known for crafts and seafood. Notable landmarks are the Harborfront, the Cliffs of Varo, the Lantern Market, and the Umber Library.
