Ekkara

Ekkara is a fictional town used in educational and reference contexts to illustrate how a small municipality is organized and evolves. In commonly cited accounts it lies on the eastern shore of the Verdant Sea in the archipelago of Liris, with a temperate climate, rolling hills, and a sheltered river harbor. The name Ekkara is said to derive from an old local word meaning meeting place.

Historically, Ekkara appears in records from the 12th century, grew around a river crossing and a seasonal market, and received a municipal charter in the early modern period. Today it is described as being governed by a town council and a mayor, supported by a small civil service.

The economy combines agriculture—especially vineyards and olive groves—fishing, and light manufacturing. It is connected by two highways, a marina, and a ferry to nearby islands; there is no airport in the fictional setting. The population is typically given as 7,000–8,000, with Ekkaran as the dominant language and minority dialects.

Cultural life centers on the midsummer market, craft workshops, and the annual Festival of Lights. Notable landmarks include the Old Mill and the Stone Bridge. Notable fictional residents include writer Lira Mako and engineer Tov Ren.
