The process begins by selecting a proposal distribution, denoted as q(x), from which samples can be easily drawn. A sample x is then drawn from q(x). A constant M is chosen such that M * q(x) is greater than or equal to the target probability density function, f(x), for all x. A uniform random number u is then generated between 0 and 1. If u is less than or equal to f(x) / (M * q(x)), the sample x is accepted. Otherwise, it is rejected.

This method is particularly useful when the target distribution f(x) is known only up to a normalizing constant, or when direct sampling from f(x) is computationally expensive or impossible. The efficiency of the method, measured by the acceptance rate, depends heavily on the choice of the proposal distribution and the constant M. A tighter bound of M * q(x) to f(x) leads to a higher acceptance rate.
