Eftirfæðing

Eftirfæðing is an Icelandic term that translates to "afterbirth" in English. It refers to the placenta and fetal membranes that are expelled from the uterus after childbirth. This mass of tissue, which nourished the fetus during pregnancy, detaches from the uterine wall and is delivered shortly after the baby.

The process of afterbirth delivery is also known as the third stage of labor. It typically begins soon after the birth of the baby and can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. Uterine contractions, which continue after the baby is born, help to separate the placenta from the uterine lining and push it out.

Once expelled, the afterbirth is examined by a healthcare provider to ensure it is intact and that no fragments remain in the uterus. Retained placental fragments can lead to postpartum hemorrhage or infection. In some cultures, the afterbirth holds symbolic significance and may be buried or kept for traditional practices. The term "eftirfæðing" specifically refers to the physical components delivered after the baby.
