In practice, efficiencycritical design emphasizes metrics such as cycle time, output per unit energy, and resource utilization. Decisions are guided by data, modeling, and optimization techniques, with the aim of reducing waste and cost. Designers must consider trade-offs with reliability, resilience, and flexibility, since excessive focus on efficiency can increase fragility under unexpected conditions.

Domains where the concept appears include manufacturing and supply chains, data-center and software performance engineering, and energy systems. Examples include optimizing a production line for minimum energy per unit of product or selecting routing in a network to minimize latency and power, even if redundancy is slightly reduced.
