Eeltootmine

Eeltootmine refers to the process of cultivating eels, also known as aquaculture, for commercial purposes. This practice involves raising eels from their larval stage to adulthood in controlled environments, such as ponds, tanks, or raceways. The primary species targeted for eeltootmine are the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica).

The lifecycle of eels is complex, involving a migratory phase in saltwater and a growth phase in freshwater. Due to challenges in breeding eels in captivity, eeltootmine often relies on wild-caught glass eels, the juvenile stage of the eel, which are then transferred to aquaculture facilities for further growth. This reliance on wild stocks has led to concerns about sustainability and the impact on wild eel populations.

Eel farms typically provide a controlled diet and water conditions to optimize growth rates and minimize disease. Feed often consists of fish meal, krill, and other protein-rich ingredients. Water quality, including temperature, oxygen levels, and pH, is carefully monitored and managed.
