Eelset

Eelset is a term used in ichthyology and ecological surveys to describe a defined assemblage of eel species within a defined study area or habitat. It is not a formal taxonomic category; rather, it functions as a practical unit for reporting and analysis of eel communities.

The term emerged in regional biodiversity studies in the early 21st century as researchers sought a concise way to summarize eel diversity across heterogeneous habitats. A basic eelset comprises all eel species recorded in an area during a specified time frame, bounded by geography or habitat type.

Criteria and methods: Eelsets are defined by boundaries such as a river stretch, estuary, or coral reef, and by the sampling period. They are typically identified from field surveys (nets, traps, or sonar), standardized night-time sampling, and increasingly, environmental DNA. The presence of two or more species during the survey period is often used as a practical threshold, though many studies treat eelset boundaries as flexible.

Applications and significance: Eelsets facilitate comparisons of eel communities across sites and over time, supporting biodiversity assessments, life-history studies, and fisheries management. They can help detect shifts in species composition related to habitat alteration or climate change.
