Edgelitjärjestelmissä, often translated as "edge lighting systems," refers to a method of illuminating displays, particularly in the context of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) found in televisions, monitors, and tablets. Unlike direct-lit systems where LEDs are placed directly behind the entire screen, edgelit systems position light sources along the edges of the display panel.

These edge-mounted LEDs then project light across the back of the panel through a light guide plate. This plate diffuses the light, spreading it evenly across the entire screen surface to illuminate the pixels. This design allows for thinner and lighter display constructions compared to direct-lit alternatives, as it eliminates the need for a large array of LEDs.

However, edgelit systems can sometimes exhibit less uniform brightness across the screen, with potential for "clouding" or brighter areas near the edges. Despite this, their cost-effectiveness and ability to achieve slim profiles have made them a prevalent technology in many consumer electronic devices. The effectiveness of the light diffusion and the quality of the light guide plate are crucial factors in achieving good image quality with edgelit technology.
