Earth stabilization refers to a range of techniques and practices employed to prevent or mitigate land degradation, soil erosion, and mass movement such as landslides. These methods are crucial for maintaining the stability of slopes, protecting infrastructure, and preserving ecological balance. The primary goals of earth stabilization are to increase the shear strength of soil, reduce pore water pressure, and control surface runoff.

Common methods include vegetation establishment, where plants with extensive root systems bind the soil together, making it more resistant to erosion and slippage. Geotextiles, such as geogrids and geonets, are synthetic materials used to reinforce soil structures and prevent soil migration. Retaining walls, constructed from various materials like concrete, stone, or timber, are built to hold back soil on slopes, preventing it from sliding downwards. Bioengineering techniques combine natural elements with engineering principles, often incorporating live plant materials into structural designs. Contour plowing and terracing are agricultural practices that reduce the speed of water runoff down slopes, thereby minimizing soil erosion. In some cases, dewatering techniques are used to lower the groundwater table, reducing the hydrostatic pressure that can contribute to slope instability. The selection of an appropriate earth stabilization method depends on factors such as soil type, slope gradient, environmental conditions, and the intended use of the land.
