EYS
EYS is the symbol for the human gene eyes shut homolog. The gene encodes a large extracellular matrix protein expressed predominantly in the retina and is important for the maintenance of photoreceptor cells, particularly in the outer segments and connecting cilium. The protein is involved in the structural integrity of photoreceptor outer segments and in ciliary functions essential for photoreceptor survival.
Mutations in EYS are among the most common causes of autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa in many populations
In evolutionary terms, EYS has homologs in multiple vertebrate and invertebrate species. The human EYS gene
Outside of genetics, EYS can function as an acronym in various contexts, referring to organizations, programs,
