EXIFkuvatiedot, or EXIF image data, refers to metadata embedded in image files by digital cameras and editing software. The EXIF standard, Exchangeable Image File Format, defines a set of tags that describe how a photo was captured and processed. It is commonly used in JPEG and TIFF files and can be read by many photo viewers, editors, and operating systems.

Typical EXIF data includes information about the capture: camera make and model, date and time (DateTime), exposure settings (ExposureTime), aperture (FNumber), ISO sensitivity (ISOSpeedRatings), focal length (FocalLength), flash usage, white balance, and image dimensions. Many devices also record GPS coordinates, altitude, and bearing when location services are enabled. Additional fields may include software used for processing, whether a flash fired, and various camera or lens specifications.

EXIF data serves multiple purposes in photography workflows. It helps organize and compare shots, analyze exposure and gear usage, and provide provenance for archival or copyright purposes. Because EXIF can reveal where a photo was taken, it also raises privacy considerations when sharing images online. Some platforms strip EXIF data upon upload, while others allow users to remove or edit metadata before distribution.

Common tools for viewing and editing EXIF data include ExifTool, Exiv2, and various photo editing suites such as Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop, as well as built-in viewers on macOS and Windows. While EXIF is widely supported, not all fields are guaranteed to be present, and metadata can be altered by software or users, so it should be treated as useful but not a definitive record.
