EVPN standards, or Ethernet Virtual Private Network standards, define a set of protocols and procedures for building scalable and efficient Layer 2 VPNs over an IP/MPLS backbone. The primary goal of EVPN is to extend Layer 2 connectivity across a Layer 3 network, allowing devices to communicate as if they were on the same local network segment, regardless of their physical location.

EVPN utilizes Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) extensions to advertise MAC address and IP address information between Provider Edge (PE) devices. This allows for intelligent forwarding decisions and efficient MAC address learning without requiring flooding of broadcast, unknown unicast, and multicast (BUM) traffic. Instead, EVPN employs a selective forwarding mechanism, sending BUM traffic only to the necessary destinations.

Key components of EVPN include MAC-VRF (MAC Virtual Routing and Forwarding) instances, which isolate Layer 2 forwarding tables, and Multi-Protocol BGP (MP-BGP) for control plane signaling. The standards define various EVPN route types, such as Ethernet Auto-Discovery (EAD) routes, MAC/IP advertisement routes, and inclusive multicast routes, each serving a specific purpose in establishing and maintaining the VPN. EVPN supports different data plane encapsulation methods, including MPLS and VXLAN, providing flexibility in deployment. Its scalability and advanced features make it a popular choice for modern data center and service provider networks.
