EUmelkekvoten refers to the quota system implemented by the European Union (EU) to regulate the production and export of dairy products, specifically milk. The system was introduced to manage the EU's dairy market, stabilize dairy prices, and ensure a fair and balanced market environment.

The EUmelkekvoten was established under the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP), which aimed to provide a framework for agricultural production and trade within the EU. The quota system divides milk production among EU member states, setting limits on the amount of milk each country can produce and export. This approach helps maintain supply and demand balance, reduces surplus production, and prevents dairy price fluctuations.

Countries exceeding their allocated milk quota are obliged to pay the EU a penalty per kilogram of excess milk produced. Conversely, they can accumulate unused quota for future periods. This flexible approach allows member states to plan their dairy production and fulfill demand more accurately.

The EUmelkekvoten also includes provisions for small and medium-sized farms. These producers are entitled to a higher quota per farm, ensuring they can continue to produce milk even in periods of market surplus. In exceptional circumstances, the EU can temporarily reallocate or increase the quota, but this must be accompanied by reciprocal measures to prevent market disruption.
