EURAMET

EURAMET, the European Association of National Metrology Institutes and designated institutes, is the European regional metrology organization that coordinates metrology activities across Europe. It brings together national metrology institutes (NMIs) and designated institutes to advance measurement science, maintain traceability to the International System of Units (SI), and support metrology-based services for industry, science, and society.

As a non-profit, membership-based organization, EURAMET serves as a platform for collaboration, information exchange, and joint projects among European NMIs and related institutes. It works to align European metrology with global standards and to strengthen the region’s measurement capabilities through coordinated programs, networks, and governance structures. EURAMET maintains working relationships with the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and with other regional metrology organizations to ensure coherence in international metrology activities.

A major component of EURAMET’s activities is the administration and coordination of European metrology programs, including the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR). Through such programs, the association funds and oversees research and development projects in measurement science, competency, and infrastructure. It also oversees interlaboratory comparisons, key comparisons, proficiency testing, and metrological services that help ensure measurement accuracy and comparability across Europe.

Governance is membership-driven, with a council and a secretariat that coordinate activities, project management, and communications. EURAMET’s work supports industry competitiveness, consumer protection, environmental monitoring, and scientific progress by promoting reliable, traceable measurements across diverse sectors.
