EUEurostat

EU Eurostat, commonly referred to as Eurostat, is the statistical office of the European Union. It provides high-quality official statistics to EU institutions, national authorities, researchers, and the public. Based in Luxembourg, Eurostat coordinates with data providers from member states to ensure the comparability and coherence of statistics across the union.

Eurostat collects, harmonizes, analyzes, and disseminates data on a wide range of topics, including the economy, labor markets, population, health, education, environment, agriculture, and trade. It develops common definitions and reporting methods to enable cross-country comparisons and publishes datasets, indicators, metadata, and explanatory material such as Statistics Explained.

Data are released through the Eurostat website (ec.europa.eu/eurostat) and are used by EU bodies, national governments, researchers, journalists, and the public. Eurostat follows European statistical law, notably Regulation (EC) No 223/2009 on European statistics, and adheres to established quality principles: relevance, accuracy, timeliness, accessibility, comparability, and coherence. It works with national statistical institutes and other data producers to collect and validate information while upholding confidentiality and data protection standards.

History and context: Eurostat originated in the early years of European integration as the Statistical Office of the European Communities and was renamed Eurostat. It plays a central role in informing policy development, monitoring of economic and social performance, and providing analysis that underpins funding, governance, and research.
