The ESX protein secretion system is a type VII secretion system, which is distinct from the more common type I-IV secretion systems found in other bacteria. There are five ESX gene clusters (ESX-1 to ESX-5) in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, each encoding different sets of ESX proteins.
