EPSGkoodien, also known as EPSG codes, are numerical identifiers used to define coordinate reference systems (CRS). These codes are managed by the European Petroleum Survey Group (EPSG), a now-disbanded organization that established a registry of CRS parameters. The EPSG registry serves as a standardized way to describe how geographic coordinates relate to locations on Earth.

Each EPSG code represents a unique combination of a datum, spheroid, and projection method. A datum defines the reference surface for measurements, a spheroid is a mathematical approximation of the Earth's shape, and a projection is a method for transforming three-dimensional coordinates into two-dimensional ones. This standardization ensures that geographic data can be accurately interpreted and shared across different software and applications. For example, EPSG:4326 commonly refers to the WGS 84 coordinate system, widely used in GPS devices and online mapping services. Without these codes, it would be difficult to ensure spatial data accuracy and interoperability.
