ECW
ECW stands for Extreme Championship Wrestling, originally Eastern Championship Wrestling. It was an American professional wrestling promotion based in Philadelphia, founded in 1992 by Tod Gordon. The promotion developed a reputation for a hardcore, unscripted style and a strong fan following at venues such as the ECW Arena. In 1994, after organizational shifts and disagreements with the National Wrestling Alliance, the promotion rebranded as Extreme Championship Wrestling under Paul Heyman’s creative direction and parted ways with the NWA.
ECW featured athletic, high-intensity in-ring action, gritty promos, and provocative storylines that contrasted with larger promotions
Influence and legacy: ECW is credited with popularizing a more adult, risk-taking style of professional wrestling
Demise and afterlives: ECW filed for bankruptcy in 2001. Its assets were purchased by World Wrestling Entertainment
