ECMAScript is a standardized scripting language specification developed by Ecma International. It is best known as the language underlying JavaScript, which is widely used for web development. ECMAScript defines the syntax, semantics, and behavior of the language, ensuring consistency across different implementations.

The first edition of ECMAScript, known as ECMAScript 1, was published in 1997. Since then, several editions have been released, each introducing new features and improvements. ECMAScript 3, published in 1999, was widely adopted and became the de facto standard for JavaScript. ECMAScript 5, released in 2009, brought significant enhancements, including strict mode, JSON support, and new array methods.

ECMAScript 6, also known as ECMAScript 2015, was a major update that introduced features such as arrow functions, classes, modules, and template literals. This edition marked a significant shift in the language's capabilities and syntax. Subsequent editions, ECMAScript 2016 to ECMAScript 2022, have continued to evolve the language, adding features like async/await, optional chaining, and logical assignment operators.

ECMAScript is maintained by the Technical Committee 39 (TC39) of Ecma International. The committee is responsible for the ongoing development and standardization of the language, ensuring that it remains relevant and powerful for modern web development. The ECMAScript specification is continuously updated to reflect the latest advancements in technology and developer needs.
