E1Übertragung refers to the transmission of electrical signals over a specific type of digital transmission system. In North America and Japan, the E1 standard is known as T1, and it carries a data rate of 1.544 megabits per second. The European E1 standard, on the other hand, offers a higher capacity with a data rate of 2.048 megabits per second. This increased capacity is achieved by utilizing more time slots for voice or data transmission.

The E1 interface is commonly used for telecommunications purposes, connecting private branch exchanges (PBXs) to public switched telephone networks (PSTNs) and for digital leased lines. It allows for the multiplexing of multiple voice channels or data streams into a single digital connection. An E1 line typically consists of 32 time slots, with 30 designated for user information (voice or data) and two reserved for signaling and framing. This structure enables the simultaneous transmission of 30 64-kilobit-per-second channels.

E1 technology is a fundamental component of digital telecommunication infrastructure, facilitating efficient and high-capacity communication links. While newer technologies have emerged, E1 remains in use in many regions for its established reliability and compatibility with existing equipment. Its implementation is crucial for supporting voice calls, data services, and other communication needs in various business and public network environments. The E1 standard is part of the Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy (PDH) family of digital transmission systems.
