The flow capacity of a system is influenced by several factors. These include the dimensions of the conduit, such as its diameter and length, as well as the material properties of the conduit walls, which can affect friction. The viscosity and density of the fluid or gas also play a significant role. Furthermore, the pressure difference driving the flow and the presence of any restrictions or obstructions within the system, like valves or filters, directly impact the achievable flow rate.

In practical applications, flow capacities are quantified using standard units like liters per minute (L/min), cubic meters per hour (m³/h), or standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) for gases. Engineers use these values to select appropriate pumps, pipes, valves, and other components.
