Dunamase

Dunamase is a prominent rocky outcrop located in County Laois, Ireland. It is situated near the village of The Rock, approximately 5 kilometers east of Portlaoise. The most striking feature of Dunamase is the impressive ruin of Dunamase Castle, which crowns its summit. The rock itself rises dramatically from the surrounding plain, offering panoramic views of the Irish countryside.

Historically, Dunamase has been a site of strategic importance for centuries. Evidence suggests Iron Age occupation of the rock, and it later became a significant stronghold for the Kingdom of Laois. Following the Norman invasion of Ireland, the castle was established by the Normans in the 12th century. It played a crucial role in various conflicts throughout medieval Irish history, changing hands between different Gaelic and Anglo-Norman lords.
