Dubbelbedömning

Dubbelbedömning (double assessment) is a method in which two independent assessors evaluate the same work, performance, or case to increase the reliability and fairness of judgments. By having multiple evaluators, the approach aims to reduce individual bias and error and to ensure that decisions are supported by more than a single viewpoint. It is used across professional fields and settings to improve quality control and accountability.

In education, dubbelbedömning is commonly applied to high-stakes assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, or exams. The standard process involves independent scoring by two teachers using a common rubric. The scores are then compared, and discrepancies are discussed to reach a final grade according to predefined rules (for example, reconciliation to a consensus, averaging, or a senior examiner’s tie-break). Anonymization of submissions and the use of standardized rubrics help minimize bias, while statistics on inter-rater reliability (such as Cohen’s kappa or intraclass correlation) can be used to monitor and improve consistency. Moderation meetings may be employed to ensure alignment across a course or department.

Beyond education, dubbelbedömning can refer to second opinions or independent assessments in other sectors, including healthcare, social services, or legal-administrative contexts. In these settings, a second assessment can corroborate a diagnosis, treatment decision, or welfare determination. Benefits include enhanced reliability, transparency, and fairness, while drawbacks involve greater time and cost, the potential for unresolved disagreements, and the need for clear guidelines and assessor training to preserve consistency.
