Droptunings
Droptunings, or drop tunings, refer to a family of alternate tunings for stringed instruments, most commonly the six-string guitar, in which the lowest-pitched string is tuned down from its standard pitch. The result is a lower fundamental on the guitar’s lowest string, while keeping the remaining strings arranged in a way that preserves familiar chord shapes for many players. This technique facilitates easy access to power chords and heavier riffing by allowing players to play roots and basic shapes with the same fretting hand.
The typical approach in a drop tuning is to lower the low string to a lower pitch,
Effects and considerations include a heavier timbre and different chord voicings, which can simplify palm-muted riffs
Historically associated with modern metal and hard rock, drop tunings gained popularity in the late 20th century
