Drehzahlverhältnisse, often translated as speed ratios or gear ratios, describe the relationship between the rotational speeds of connected rotating components, such as gears, shafts, or pulleys. This ratio is fundamental in mechanical engineering and is determined by the number of teeth on meshing gears or the diameters of pulleys connected by a belt.

In a simple gear train, the speed ratio is calculated by dividing the number of teeth on the driven gear by the number of teeth on the driving gear. If the driving gear has 20 teeth and the driven gear has 40 teeth, the speed ratio is 40/20 = 2:1. This means the driven gear will rotate at half the speed of the driving gear. Conversely, if the driving gear has 40 teeth and the driven gear has 20 teeth, the ratio is 20/40 = 1:2, and the driven gear will rotate twice as fast.

Drehzahlverhältnisse are crucial for torque multiplication and speed reduction or increase. A higher speed ratio (where the driven gear has more teeth than the driving gear) results in a lower output speed but a higher output torque. Conversely, a lower speed ratio leads to a higher output speed and lower output torque. This principle is widely applied in transmissions of vehicles, gearboxes in industrial machinery, and various other mechanical systems where precise control over rotational speed and torque is necessary. Understanding and calculating these ratios is essential for designing efficient and effective power transmission systems.
