Drehmomentkennlinien, often translated as torque curves, are graphical representations that illustrate the relationship between an engine's torque output and its rotational speed (RPM). These curves are essential tools for understanding an engine's performance characteristics across its operating range. The x-axis of a Drehmomentkennlinie typically represents the engine speed in revolutions per minute, while the y-axis displays the torque produced, usually measured in Newton-meters (Nm) or pound-feet (lb-ft).

A typical Drehmomentkennlinie shows how torque varies as the engine accelerates from idle to its maximum RPM. It often features a peak torque value, which is the highest torque the engine can produce. The shape of the curve provides insights into the engine's power delivery. For instance, a curve that rises sharply and maintains a high torque output over a broad RPM range indicates good flexibility and pulling power. Conversely, a curve with a narrow peak torque band suggests a more peaky engine that requires higher revs to deliver its best performance.

In addition to torque, power curves (Leistungskennlinien) are often plotted on the same graph. Power is directly related to torque and engine speed (Power = Torque × Angular Velocity). The power curve typically rises to a higher RPM than the peak torque and indicates the engine's maximum rate of doing work. Analyzing both torque and power curves together provides a comprehensive understanding of an engine's capabilities, aiding in vehicle design, tuning, and driver expectations.
