In clinical contexts, dreamsmaking encompasses methods such as dream incubation, where a person focuses on a question or theme before sleep to influence subsequent dreams; and imagery rehearsal therapy, which uses voluntary visualization of alternate outcomes to reduce nightmare distress. Lucid dreaming training teaches awareness that one is dreaming, enabling voluntary control of dream content. More broadly, dreamsmaking can involve narrative and visualization practices aimed at translating waking concerns into symbolic dream images.

In creative and media contexts, dreamsmaking refers to crafting surreal or dreamlike sequences in literature, film, theater, and virtual experiences.
