Dramamine

Dramamine is a brand of over-the-counter antiemetic used to prevent and treat motion sickness and related nausea. The original formulation contains dimenhydrinate, a salt of diphenhydramine and chlorotheophylline. Dimenhydrinate is an antihistamine with anticholinergic properties that helps reduce signals associated with motion sickness by blocking histamine H1 receptors in the vestibular system.

Indications include prevention and relief of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness or related vestibular disturbances. It is not intended for treating nausea from all causes without medical advice. Dramamine is available in oral tablets, chewable tablets, and liquid form. Onset of action typically occurs within 15 to 60 minutes, with effects lasting several hours.

Common dosing for adults is 50 mg every 4–6 hours as needed, not to exceed 300 mg per day. Dosing for children varies by age and product; always follow the label instructions or a clinician’s guidance. Do not use in children under 2 years unless advised by a doctor.

Contraindications include hypersensitivity to dimenhydrinate or other antihistamines, and caution is advised in glaucoma, urinary retention, ulcers or other conditions affected by anticholinergic effects. Because of sedating properties, it can impair coordination and alertness; avoid driving or operating heavy machinery, and limit alcohol consumption. Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Common side effects are drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and blurred vision. Less common effects may include constipation, confusion (especially in older adults), or rapid heart rate. Interactions can occur with other CNS depressants and certain anticholinergic or sedating medications. Some Dramamine products may use different antihistamines, such as meclizine, so label instructions should be consulted.
