Downtimeramingen, or downtime estimations, is the practice of estimating the duration and frequency of system downtime for a service, process, or infrastructure component. The goal is to support planning, risk assessment, and service level agreement development by predicting how much time a system may be unavailable over a given period. They distinguish between planned downtime (maintenance) and unplanned downtime (faults).

Methods include historical data analysis, reliability modeling, probabilistic approaches, and simulations. Common metrics used are mean time between failures (MTBF), mean time to repair (MTTR), and overall availability. Availability can be expressed as A = MTBF / (MTBF + MTTR). Estimation techniques include Monte Carlo simulations, fault-tree analysis, and Bayesian forecasting.

Applications span IT services, cloud providers, manufacturing lines, and telecommunications. Downtime estimates inform maintenance scheduling, capacity planning, redundancy design, and SLA commitments. They are used to set service credits, inventory planning, and disaster recovery strategies.

Challenges and considerations include data quality, changing workloads, correlated or cascading failures, and external factors. Assumptions should be documented, and estimates updated as new data becomes available. Best practices involve using multiple scenarios, incorporating uncertainty with confidence intervals, and validating estimates against observed downtime over time.
