The concept encompasses the mechanisms by which sediment and energy move from slope to channel and onward along a watershed. Triggers like heavy rainfall, wildfires, or seismic shaking can initiate hillslope instability, producing debris that rapidly enters streams. Once in the river, particles are subject to transport, sorting, storage, and sometimes re-distribution as channel conditions change. The resulting sediment flux can influence channel morphology, flood risk, and ecosystem function, and it reflects the interaction between hillslope processes and river dynamics rather than treating them as separate systems.
