Dosisstyring is a term used in pharmacotherapy to describe the process of determining and managing the appropriate dosage of a medication for an individual patient. The goal is to achieve the desired therapeutic effect while minimizing the risk of adverse drug reactions. This involves considering a variety of factors, including the patient's age, weight, kidney and liver function, other medical conditions, and concurrent medications.

The process typically begins with establishing an initial dose based on standard guidelines and clinical trials. However, it is often necessary to adjust this dose over time based on the patient's response. This monitoring can involve clinical observation of symptoms and side effects, as well as laboratory tests to measure drug levels in the blood (therapeutic drug monitoring).

Several principles guide effective dosisstyring. These include starting with the lowest effective dose, titrating the dose upwards as needed, and individualizing the regimen for each patient. Understanding the pharmacokinetics (how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes, and excretes the drug) and pharmacodynamics (how the drug affects the body) of a medication is crucial.
