Dopplerultraäänilaitteet, often referred to as Doppler ultrasound devices, are a specialized type of medical ultrasound equipment used to assess the flow of blood within the body. Unlike conventional ultrasound which primarily visualizes anatomical structures, Doppler ultrasound utilizes the Doppler effect to measure the speed and direction of moving blood cells. This effect occurs when a sound wave reflects off a moving object, such as red blood cells, causing a shift in the frequency of the returning wave. The magnitude of this frequency shift is directly proportional to the velocity of the blood flow.

These devices typically employ transducers that emit and receive ultrasound waves. The emitted waves travel into the body and reflect off blood cells. The transducer then detects the returning echoes, and the internal processing unit analyzes the frequency shifts to generate information about blood flow. Doppler ultrasound can be displayed in various forms, including spectral Doppler, which provides a graphical representation of flow velocity over time, and color Doppler, which overlays color onto a standard ultrasound image to indicate the direction and relative speed of blood flow.
