Donoriryhmät, or blood types, are classifications of human blood based on the presence or absence of specific antigens on the surface of red blood cells. The most common system used to classify blood types is the ABO system, which is based on the presence of A and B antigens on the red blood cells. There are four main blood types in this system: A, B, AB, and O. Individuals with type A blood have A antigens on their red blood cells and B antibodies in their plasma, while those with type B blood have B antigens and A antibodies. Type AB blood has both A and B antigens but no corresponding antibodies, and type O blood has neither A nor B antigens but both A and B antibodies.

In addition to the ABO system, there is the Rh system, which is based on the presence of the Rh (D) antigen. Individuals can be Rh positive (Rh+) or Rh negative (Rh-). The combination of ABO and Rh systems results in eight possible blood types: A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+, and O-.

Blood type is determined by genetic inheritance, with the ABO and Rh genes located on chromosome 9. The ABO gene has three alleles: I^A, I^B, and i. Individuals with I^A and I^B alleles express A and B antigens, respectively, while those with the i allele do not express any antigens. The Rh gene has two alleles: D and d. Individuals with the D allele express the Rh antigen, while those with the d allele do not.

Blood type is important in medicine, particularly in blood transfusions and organ transplants. Compatibility between donor and recipient blood types is crucial to prevent immune reactions and ensure successful transfusions or transplants. Universal donors, such as type O blood, can donate to individuals of any blood type, while universal recipients, such as type AB blood, can receive blood from any donor type.
