In transplantation medicine, donorgerelateerd disease refers to any communicable disease that can be transmitted from the donor to the recipient. Routine screening of donors for blood‑borne pathogens — for example hepatitis B, hepatitis C, human immunodeficiency virus, and syphilis — aims to reduce these risks. In the Netherlands and other European countries, Dutch guidelines and the European Union directives mandate detailed donor questionnaires and laboratory testing to ensure the safety of transplant and transfusion recipients.
