The family consists of a single genus, *Donoria*, which contains only one species, *Donoria farinosa*, commonly known as the **donor tree** or **donor bush**. This plant is native to the Mediterranean region, particularly in countries such as Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, where it grows in rocky, arid environments.

*Donoria farinosa* is a small, deciduous shrub or small tree that typically reaches heights of 1 to 3 meters. Its leaves are simple, alternate, and covered in a fine, mealy powder known as farina, which helps reduce water loss and provides some protection against herbivores. The plant produces small, inconspicuous white flowers that bloom in the spring, followed by small, fleshy fruits that contain seeds.

The family Donoraceae is of limited economic importance but holds botanical interest due to its unique adaptations to harsh, dry conditions. Its mealy coating is a form of epicuticular wax, a characteristic shared with some other arid-adapted plants. Taxonomically, Donoraceae is often considered closely related to other families in Rosales, such as Rosaceae or Crassulaceae, though its exact placement within the order remains a subject of study.

The genus *Donoria* was named in honor of the Spanish botanist José Donor, though some sources suggest the name may have been a misattribution or a playful reference. Due to its restricted range and specialized habitat, *Donoria farinosa* is not currently classified as threatened, but habitat loss and climate change pose potential risks to its survival. Conservation efforts are minimal, as the species is not widely cultivated or commercially significant.
