Dominicanen

Dominicanen refers to members of the Dominican Order, also known as the Order of Preachers (Ordo Praedicatorum, OP). The order was founded by Saint Dominic in the early 13th century to promote preaching, education, and the defense of Catholic doctrine against heresy. It received papal approval from Pope Honorius III in 1216 and quickly established houses across Europe.

Dominican friars are mendicant priests and brothers who take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Female and male religious communities follow similar rules, and the order includes both active friars and cloistered nuns. The habit is traditionally white with a black mantle, earning Dominicans the nickname Blackfriars in English.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Dominicans founded schools and played a leading role in medieval scholarship. The intellectual tradition of thomism, associated with Saint Thomas Aquinas, and the order’s work in universities and preaching were central to Catholic education. Dominicans were active in missionary work, scholastic theology, philosophy, and pastoral ministry.

Today, Dominicanen are present worldwide, running parishes, schools, universities, and retreat centers. The order emphasizes study and preaching as continuing ministries, with diverse communities adapting to local contexts while maintaining their vow-driven apostolate.

In Dutch-language contexts, Dominicanen is the plural noun used for members of the Dominican Order, as well as for institutions and churches bearing their name.
