Domainwechsel refers to the process of transferring a registered domain name from one domain registrar to another. This is a common practice for domain owners who may be seeking better pricing, improved customer service, or a wider range of associated services from a different registrar. The process is governed by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and is designed to be secure and straightforward.

To initiate a domain change, the current domain owner must typically unlock the domain with their existing registrar. This is a security measure to prevent unauthorized transfers. They will also need to obtain an authorization code, often referred to as an EPP code or transfer key, from the current registrar. This code serves as a password to authorize the transfer.

Once the authorization code is obtained, the owner can then initiate the transfer request with the new registrar of their choice. The new registrar will use the authorization code to facilitate the transfer. The entire process can take several days to complete, usually between five and seven, during which time the domain's DNS records remain active, ensuring minimal disruption to the website or email services associated with the domain. After the transfer is finalized, the domain will be managed by the new registrar.
