Dohánytermék refers to any product containing tobacco that is intended for consumption. The primary active compound in tobacco is nicotine, a stimulant that is highly addictive. Tobacco is most commonly consumed by smoking, which involves burning the dried leaves of the tobacco plant and inhaling the resulting smoke. This can be done through cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or water pipes (hookahs). Other forms of tobacco consumption include chewing tobacco, snuff (inhaled powder), and dissolvable tobacco products.

The cultivation and use of tobacco have a long history, originating in the Americas. It was introduced to the rest of the world by European explorers. Over centuries, tobacco use spread globally, becoming a significant agricultural commodity and a major industry. However, scientific research over the past several decades has unequivocally linked tobacco use to a wide range of serious health problems.

Smoking is a leading cause of preventable death worldwide. It is strongly associated with lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and numerous other cancers and illnesses. The harmful effects extend beyond the smoker, as secondhand smoke exposes non-smokers to dangerous toxins. Consequently, many countries have implemented public health policies aimed at reducing tobacco consumption, including increased taxation, public smoking bans, graphic warning labels, and comprehensive advertising restrictions. Despite these efforts, tobacco remains a significant global health challenge.
