Dobbelregistrering can occur in a variety of contexts, including population registers, tax or benefits systems, healthcare records, property and vehicle registries, and customer databases. Duplicates may lead to conflicting information about the subject, duplicated benefits or charges, and inaccuracies in statistics or reporting.

The implications of duplicates include inflated counts, misallocated resources, privacy risks, and an increased potential for fraud if duplicates are exploited. Detecting and handling duplicates typically involves data quality techniques such as deduplication and master data management, using stable identifiers when available, deterministic matching on fixed attributes, and probabilistic matching when identifiers are incomplete or inconsistent.

Preventive and corrective measures include creating a canonical single record for each entity, merging or linking duplicates, and implementing governance around data entry, data standards, and identity resolution processes. Organizations may employ real-time validation, cross-system reconciliation, and data steward responsibilities to minimize occurrences. Legal and ethical considerations involve compliance with data protection and privacy laws, audit trails, and transparent documentation of decisions made during duplicate resolution.
