DNIs, or Documento Nacional de Identidad, are national identity documents issued by several countries, particularly in the Spanish-speaking world. They serve as official proof of identity and, in many cases, citizenship. The exact form, issuing authority, and uses vary by country, but DNIs commonly support access to government services, participation in elections, taxation, and interactions with public institutions. Some DNIs have electronic features or biometric data to enable online authentication and secure transactions.

Argentina: In Argentina, the Documento Nacional de Identidad is issued by the Registro Nacional de las Personas. It assigns a unique DNI number to each holder and is used for civil registration, voting, taxation, and public services. The document is issued as a plastic card and remains a primary form of identification throughout a person’s life.

Spain: In Spain, the Documento Nacional de Identidad is issued to Spanish citizens and is the principal form of identification in daily life. The DNI number is required for many administrative procedures, and the card is also used for travel within the Schengen Area. Spain also issues an electronic version, the DNIe, which enables digital signatures and online authentication.

Peru: In Peru, the Documento Nacional de Identidad is issued by RENIEC and serves as the main identity document for citizens. It is required for voting and for many administrative procedures, as well as for access to services and benefits. The Peruvian DNI is issued in a plastic card format with a unique identifying number.
