A diva is a celebrated female singer whose vocal skill, expressive range, and stage presence set her apart from peers. The term originates from the Italian diva, meaning goddess, and was historically used in opera to designate a leading female singer. It has since broadened to describe prominent women in other musical genres and, more generally, high-profile female performers in theater, film, and popular culture.

In classical music, a diva is typically a principal soprano or mezzo-soprano who demonstrates technical mastery and commanding presence. Historical operatic divas such as Adelina Patti, Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, Leontyne Price, and Joan Sutherland became emblematic of the ideal, while many contemporary singers are also described as divas when their artistry and charisma shape performances.

Beyond opera, the term is commonly applied to leading female stars in pop, R&B, and related genres, marking exceptional talent and star power. The label can carry pejorative connotations when used to imply demanding behavior or ego, reflecting stereotypes about women in positions of fame. As such, the meaning of diva is contested: it can honor technical excellence and artistic impact while also signaling gendered expectations or criticisms of temperament.
