Dithioketals

Dithioketals are organic compounds containing the functional group R2C(SR')2, where R represents alkyl or aryl groups and R' represents alkyl or aryl groups. They are the sulfur analogs of ketals, where the oxygen atoms of the carbonyl group in a ketone or aldehyde have been replaced by sulfur atoms. Specifically, dithioketals are derived from the reaction of a ketone or aldehyde with a thiol in the presence of an acid catalyst. The reaction proceeds via nucleophilic attack of the thiol on the carbonyl carbon, followed by elimination of water and further reaction with a second molecule of thiol.

These compounds are generally more stable than their corresponding ketals, particularly towards acidic hydrolysis. This stability makes them useful protecting groups for carbonyl functionalities in organic synthesis. When a carbonyl group needs to be masked during a reaction that would otherwise affect it, it can be converted into a dithioketal. The dithioketal can then be easily removed under specific conditions, often using mercury(II) salts or other desulfurization reagents, to regenerate the original carbonyl compound.

Dithioketals also find applications as intermediates in organic synthesis. For instance, they can be desulfurized to alkenes or oxidized to other sulfur-containing compounds. Their unique chemical properties, arising from the presence of sulfur atoms, contribute to their versatility in synthetic chemistry.
